Important Dates Venue
Muenster, with a history of 1200 years, is situated in the park-like "Muensterland", about 50 km from the border with the Netherlands. Muenster's charm and beauty are fascinating. Narrow houses with their steep gables and arched arcades on massive columns line the main street "Prinzipalmarkt". You also may enjoy the famous castle, a beautiful market in front of the 13th century cathedral, exclusive little shops and a cup of coffee in one of  the delightful street cafes. For further information see
http://www.uni-muenster.de/Dezernat2/forschung/fors-ms1.htm
http://www.muenster.de
http://www.stadt-luedinghausen.de/KulturuTourismus/3burgen.htm
.
Travelling to Muenster
Some aircarriers offer intercontinental rates to Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Munich or other places in Germany without surcharge for connecting flights to Muenster. The Muenster airport (FMO) itself has flight connections to all major European airports. All fast speed Intercity trains stop at Muenster on the route between Frankfurt - Duesseldorf - Muenster - Bremen - Hamburg. There are two Autobahn exits for Muenster if you prefer to come by car.
.
Program Structure
Mathematics looks different through the eyes of a child. The conference will concentrate on these views and meet especially the needs of younger children (age about 5-15). The goal of the conference will be an exchange of ideas and experiences rather than sitting and listening. The conference will concentrate on practical issues. We will have workshops, presentations of successful projects, activity displays, discussion groups on posters, reports on practical experiences, and exhibitions including manipulatives and audio-visual and emotional components. The international and multicultural input may open new views on traditional curriculae and may stimulate activities for the benefit of our young generation. The main language will be English. There will be one strand in German. The audience will be teachers, teacher educators, and all who are interested in the subject of the conference. Proposals for the following contributions will be welcome.
.
Types Description
Workshop All participants must be involved in creative activities.
Activity Display
with
Discussiongroup
Present a poster with more than a written text only. Try to fascinate all our senses. Provoke curiosity already by a distant view. Encourage your visitors to play, to manipulate, to discover, ... (You will have a board and a table for your activity display).
Activity displays with related topics will be placed together. For each of these poster groups there will be a time slot to discuss common and/or divergent views on these posters. The IPC will form panels  from the authors for the discussion groups and will give suggestions or statements to be discussed then.
Challenge Formulate a challenging question or problem. We will put your suggestion on display and print it in the proceedings. The conference participants may form teams to find solutions. There will be a deadline to deliver solutions to the organizers. After the deadline there will be a panel of the authors to present or to let present creative solutions. There will be an award for the most creative ideas.
     Project
     Presentation
A successful project on "creativity in mathematics education" will be presented. Do not only read a text. The audience should get the flavor of the project by participating actively, using.
     Report on
     Experiences
Present your practical experiences on "creativity in mathematics education". Do not only read a text. The audience should get the flavor of the activities in the classroom by all senses.
Exhibition Put on display your materials or let us view your videos. We will have  exhibitions from individuals and commercial ones.
.
At the end of this announcement you will find appropriate forms for proposing your contribution. Each participant may propose several Activity Displays and/or Exhibitions and/or Challenges but only one of the other activities. The conference will close with a Panel Discussion of the IPC members on "Successful Steps into a Creative Future".
 .
Call for Active Contributions
Participants who want to submit a proposal for an active contribution are requested to send an abstract in English. The abstract must describe the activities intended at the conference. In addition we need a written summary of the (curricular) mathematical goals behind and the related age group of the school children. The abstracts will be reviewed. After acceptance they will be published in the conference proceedings which are available at the beginning of the conference. The deadline for receiving abstracts will be Febr. 28, 1999.
Please, if possible, type your abstract with a word processor (winword, word perfect or similar) and use the following formats: frame 25 cm x 17 cm, 1.5 spaced, 12' heigth, letters in Times New Roman. We must get three paper copies for each proposed contribution. Please make sure that these copies are camera-ready for reproduction. We would appreciate very much getting also an electronic version of your proposals by e-mail or in Winword (as an appendix to your e-mail).
.
Social Events
We will start with a Welcome Party on July 15, dinner, wine, beer and softdrinks included. The participants will be responsible for the entertainment: Bring a CD with a traditional or popular folk music of your country. On Sunday, July 18, we will have an excursion into the Muensterland, visiting one or two of the famous so called "water castles", i. e. castles surrounded by one to three moats. Sunday evening will end with a Get-Together-Party.
