Important Dates
Travelling to Muenster
Some air carriers offer intercontinental rates to Frankfurt, Duesseldorf,
Munich or other places in Germany without surcharge for connecting flights
to Muenster. The Muenster airport (FMO) itself has flight connections to
all major European airports. All fast speed Intercity trains stop at Muenster
on the route between Frankfurt - Duesseldorf - Muenster - Bremen - Hamburg.
There are two Autobahn exits for Muenster if you prefer to come by car.
Arrival by air:
At the airport there are public busses to Muenster. They will bring
you into the city and to the railway station in Muenster. Ask the driver
if he will stop close to your hotel.
Arrival by train:
There are taxis of course, but there are also public busses running
every 10 minutes from the railway station to all hotels in the city.
Arrival by car:
Follow the signs “Centrum”/"Stadtmitte". Ask then pedestrians in the
city for more details to your hotel by showing them the written address.
If you see the lake “Aasee” then you are close to the Hotel Kolping and
to the Jugendgaestehaus.
Program Structure
Mathematics looks different through the eyes of a child. The conference
will concentrate on these views and meet especially the needs of younger
children (age about 5-15). The goal of the conference will be an exchange
of ideas and experiences rather than sitting and listening. The conference
will concentrate on practical issues. We will have workshops, presentations
of successful projects, activity displays, discussion groups on posters,
reports on practical experiences, and exhibitions including manipulatives
and audio-visual and emotional components. The international and multicultural
input may open new views on traditional curricula and may stimulate activities
for the benefit of our young generation. The main language will be English.
There will be one strand in German. The audience will be teachers, teacher
educators, and all who are interested in the subject of the conference.
The deadline for writing proposals was February 28, 1999. There will be
the following types of contributions:
| Types | Description |
| Workshop | All participants will be involved in creative activities. |
|
|
Presentation of a poster with more than a written text only (fascinating all our senses, provoking curiosity already by a distant view, encouraging visitors to play, to manipulate, to discover, ...). Activity displays with related topics will be placed together. For the poster groups there will be a final summary on Monday morning to discuss common and/or divergent views on these posters. The IPC has formed a panel from the authors and has given suggestions or statements to be discussed then. |
| Challenges
(*) |
Challenging questions or problems are put on display and printed in the proceedings. The conference participants may form teams to find solutions. The deadline to deliver solutions to the organisers will be Sunday noon. On Monday morning there will be a panel of the authors to present or to let present creative solutions. There will be an award for the most creative ideas. |
|
|
Presentation of successful projects on "creativity in mathematics education" (not only reading a text, the audience shall get the flavour of the project by participating actively, using all the senses) |
|
|
Presentation of practical experiences on "creativity in mathematics education" (not only reading a text, the audience shall get the flavour of the activities in the classroom) |
| Exhibitions
(*) |
Display of materials or videos. We will have exhibitions from individuals and commercial ones. |
|
|
The conference will close with a Panel Discussion of the IPC members on "Successful Steps into a Creative Future". |
| (*) | There will be one special time slot each on Friday and on Saturday to study and to discuss the Activity Displays, the Challenges and the Exhibitions |
Those who cannot join the conference, but who wish to get the proceedings, must write to the Conference Secretariat no later than June 4, 1999. In this case please also use the registration form at the end of this announcement.
Social Events
We will start with a Get-Together-Party on Thursday, July 15, in a
200 years old farmers cottage near Muenster (7:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m.,
a special dinner, wine, beer and softdrinks included). The participants
will play an active role and they will be responsible for the entertainment:
Please bring a traditional or popular folk music of your country.
On Friday and Saturday the Scientific Program will be followed by a “Happy Hour” with wine, beer, softdrinks and snacks (5:30 p.m. till 6:30 p.m.).
On Sunday afternoon, July 18, we will have an excursion into the Muensterland, visiting one or two of the famous so called "water castles", i. e. castles surrounded by one to three moats. Our bus then will bring us to Tecklenburg, a picturesque little village in the Teutoburger Wald mountains. The evening will end with a Westphalian Party in a rural surrounding, dinner, wine, beer and softdrinks included.
Accompanying Persons
Accompanying persons will participate in all social events. There also
