May 28 - June 3, 2000, Workshop: "Geometric Groups and Bounded Topology"
- Organizers: Organizers: Ian Hambleton,
Wolfgang Lück,
Erik Pedersen
- The fundamental work of M. Gromov on the 'coarse geometry' of finitely presented groups has opened up
many new directions in combinatorial group theory and geometric topology. In about the
same period, the work of Bestvina, Farrell & Jones, Carlsson & Pedersen, Connes & Moscovici, Ferry & Weinberger,
Kasparov and Roe has shown that large classes of infinite discrete groups
can be understood by methods from foliations, bounded topology or C*-algebras.
The proposed workshop would attempt to bring together researches in these distinct but closely
related areas to develop interactions between the topological, geometrical, group-theoretic and
analytic aspects of this theme.
- Confirmed Participants Ballmann, Bestvina, Bridson, Dranishnikov, Farrell, Ferry,
Geoghegan, Goldfarb, Grigochuk, Higson, Kapovich, Kleiner, Leeb, Ranicki, Roe, Schwartz, Valette, Weinberger, Yu
