Micro-workshop on Noncommutative Geometry and KK-theory for the N-body Problem

Münster, 29. August – 02. September 2016

Organized by Joachim Cuntz, Jean Bellissard and Wilhelm Winter.

The aim of this workshop is it to start a new program of research with the following targets:

– Develop the mathematical tools necessary for the description of quantum N-body systems occurring in condensed matter physics, including aperiodicity or disorder.

– Describe the topological invariants of such models through using KK-Theory, and prove that these invariants are stable under various physical perturbations.

We will have a small number of introductory lectures in the morning and leave plenty of time for discussions in the afternoon.

To get started:

Walk to the institute on Monday morning; we meet 9:00–9:30 on 4th floor of the tall building.

Talks start at 9:30.

Schedule of morning talks in M5 (preliminary):

Monday  9:30–10:30 Rennie: “KK-theory”

Monday 11:00–12:00 Carey: “Introductory lecture”

Tuesday  9:30–10:30 Kellendonk: “Torsion-valued pairings

between real K-theory and cyclic cohomology”

Tuesday 11:00–12:00 Schulz-Baldes: “Constructive

    KK-theory of weak topological invariants”

Wednesday  9:30–10:30 Bourne: “Continuous topological phases

    and index theory”

    nuclear C*-algebras”

Friday  9:30–10:30: t.b.a.

Friday 11:00–12:00: t.b.a.

Schedule of afternoon sessions in SR4 (preliminary):

Workshop Dinner

Tuesday, 19:00, I Galletti, Germania Campus

Wireless / local desktops:

If possible, use eduroam. Alternatively, Elke will be able

to provide you with a temporary guest login.

Talks:

In M5, ground floor, library building.

Afternoon sessions:

In SR4, 4th floor of the tall building.

Coffee breaks:

Lichthof, 4th floor, tall building.

Lunch:

Mensa am Ring is the default place. For coffee, use Viva Café (not the (instant) coffee bar). Or the Italian places. Or the Lichthof.

Dinner / beer:

La Vecchia Casa is quite convenient. There are also many places downtown; typical Westfalian restaurants are Kiepenkerl, Pinkus, Leve, Stuhlmacher, or Drübbelken.

Go to Jüdefelder Straße or Kreuzstraße for classical (typical?) student bars.

At the “Hafen” you’ll find a lot of restaurants and bars; nice to sit outside when the weather is good. (On the other side of town; it’s possible to walk, but not exactly close.)

A little more fancy: Gourmet 1895 (*), Villa Medici, Giverny,

Il Cucchiaio Argento, Rotkehlchen, Spitzner im Oerschen Hof, Acacia.

Bicycles:

You’ll hear a lot of talk about Münster being a bike place.

It’s true, so no loitering on the red bike tracks.

You can rent a bike from the Radstation at the station or downtown.

Office space

...is sparse. We have booked SR4 for the afternoons throughout the week as common work space. You can also use the library.

Here is some general information on travel, accomodation etc.
